*Giuseppe Marullo (circa 1615-1658) MADONNA AND CHILD WITH SAINT ELIZABETH signed lower center IOSEPH. (indistincly) M.L.F. oil on canvas 70 3/4 by 54 1/2 in. 179.7 by 138.4cm. De Dominici described Marullo as a strict follower of Stanzione who at a later date strayed from the master's style. However, it appears that, in fact, Marullo remained a follower of Stanzione throughout his life while incorporating stylistic ideas of Emilian classicism into his own oeuvre. The present composition relates to a Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine, formerly ascribed to Stanzione and now thought to be by a follower, in the Cappilla de San Pedro in the Cathedral, Toledo (see S. Schutze and T. Willette, Massimo Stanzione, 1992, p. 255, no. C52, illus. p. 425, no. 414).
