Notes

The present work most likely dates to one of the earliest phases of Giampietrino's work when he was particularly influenced by Marco d'Oggiono, one of Leonardo's pupils (see C. Geddo, 'Le Pale d'arte del Giampietrino: ipotesi per un percorso stilistico', Arte lombarda, no. 101, 1992, pp. 67-82). Related paintings by Giampietrino from this period include two of the Madonna and Child (Rome, Galleria Borghese, oil on panel, 30¾ x 23 5/8 in.; and Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, oil on panel, 26 3/8 x 21¼ in.). The early provenance records for the present lot include it in the Aldobrandini collection, where it was attributed to Leonardo and sometimes identified as a Portrait of Artemesia.
