NOTE

In this ornamental design, the eagle and the serpent represent an allegory of Good Government. It is related to plate XI in Albertolli's publication of 1796, Miscellanea per i gioveni studiosi di disegno, a manual which he prepared for the students of the Scuola di Ornato of Brera (see E. Colle, Giocondo Albertolli: I repertori d' ornato, Milan 2002, p. 39, no.35). In 1775 Albertolli, who came from a family of artist decorators, moved to Milan to became a professor of ornament and design at the Accademia of Brera.
