Questa tavola, raffigurante due monaci in lettura in un angolo fiorito del monastero, è un tipico esempio dell'atmosfere conventuali predilette dal Toma, in consonanza con la letteratura romantica minore, di cui Il romanzo del chiostro (esposto nella retrospettiva del 1891) è l'esempio più noto.

Tra i maggiori pittori dell'Ottocento napoletano e tra i più originali del suo tempo in Italia, conobbe un’infanzia infelice tra ospizi per poveri, conventi e per un certo tempo anche il carcere; esperienze queste che segnarono per la vita la sua sensibilità. Nei Ricordi di un orfano, descrivendo la sua infanzia di orfano privo di affetti, delineò una sufficiente guida per capire la sua personalità di artista, impregnata di tristezza.
Nel 1855, dopo un litigio con i parenti affidatari, raggiunse fortunosamente Napoli e si pose al seguito del pittore Alessandro Fergola allora impegnato nella decorazione de La Favorita, di Donizetti, realizzando per lui soprattutto bozzetti e divenendo, egli stesso, un buon artigiano esperto d’ornato.
Nel 1858 si iscrisse al Reale Istituto di Belle Arti, seguendo la scuola di nudo di Mancinelli e realizzando ritratti secondo un gusto ancora neoclassico.Nel 1886 Toma prese parte, su invito di Morelli, alla prima Promotrice di Belle Arti di Napoli, di cui fu socio dal 1867 al 1880, maturando la sua maniera di intendere il quadro di storia, sia antica che contemporanea, attraverso una rappresentazione dei sentimenti e delle situazioni psicologiche, piuttosto che attraverso le ricostruzioni filologiche.
La ricerca prospettica insieme alla sua eccezionale padronanza del mezzo luministico, graduato in modo tenue tanto da fornire una base unitaria al dipinto e giocato su tonalità fredde (particolari furono le gamme dei grigi e dei neri), costituirono i principali elementi della sua fase matura.
Dopo la crisi del 1880 mutò radicalmente la sua tecnica: abbandonò il tonalismo che lo poneva fuori del dibattito del tempo e si accostò alla pittura di “macchia”, realizzando una serie di dipinti di grande luminosità, con un sistema di pennellate larghe e ben individuate.
