Ce tableau inédit illustre un épisode de l'Ancien Testament, qui n'a pas été souvent traité au cours des XVIIème-XVIIIème siècle.
Rejeté par Dieu, le roi Saül est envahi d'une sombre fureur.
Sur la suggestion d'un serviteur, Saül fait appeler au palais un cithariste afin de le calmer par la musique de son instrument.
Choisi pour cette entreprise, le jeune David joue donc de la harpe en présence du roi afin de ramener son esprit déchaîné à une plus juste raison.

L'analyse stylistique de cette oeuvre inédite permet de l'inclure dans le catalogue de Giacomo Zoboli. Après un apprentissage à Modène chez Francesco Stringa, peintre de la famille d'Este, Zoboli part travailler à Bologne dans l'atelier de Giovan Gioseffo Dal Sole, sous la protection du marquis Taddeo Rangoni.
Ici, il s'imprègne du style barocchetto, caractérisé par une grâce exsangue qui se retrouve, parfois, dans ses tableaux suivants.
Les sources rappellent qu'il obtient, durant son séjour bolonais, d'importantes commandes de la part de l'Electeur de Bavière et des Habsbourg d'Autriche.

Entre 1713 et 1715, Zoboli est à Rome.

La rencontre avec la peinture romaine, celle de Carlo Maratta notamment, donne vie à une nouvelle phase de sa production artistique.
Le style imitant celui de Dal Sole se trouve, en effet, filtré par une vision plus classique. Zoboli s'oriente alors vers une culture post-marattienne , en vogue à Rome durant la première moitié de XVIIIème siècle, si bien qu'en 1718 il est reçu à l'Académie des Vertueux au Panthéon et, qu'en 1725, il est admis à l'Académie de Saint-Luc.
De prestigieux collectionneurs font appel à lui comme le cardinal Neri Maria Corsini, petit-fils du pape Clément XII.

Dans la ville des papes, Zoboli réside jusqu'à la mort, même s'il maintient de nombreux rapports avec Modène et l'Emilie.
Ici, il suit essentiellement un double parcours.

Au premier appartiennent les peintures d'histoire sacrée, destinées à satisfaire avant tout les commandes du clergé, et surtout celles des Jésuites.

Au second groupe se rattachent quelques peintures d'une modernité extraordinaire, comme la Mort de Pompée (collection particulière, Italie ou d'autres scènes historiques destinée à la noblesse la plus éclairée.
Une partie de la critique la plus récente a souligné, à propos de cette toile, qu'on peut ici saisir les prodromes de la doctrine néoclassique, en avance sur son temps.

Notre tableau est très proche du pendant de cette toile, représentant la Mort de César (même collection privée et daté de 1724).

Nous y retrouvons la même mise en scène classique non empreinte de majesté, le même pavement de marbre en damier, l'estrade surélevée sur laquelle se trouve le trône royal, les colonnes cannelées et une ouverture sur le fond à droite, les vêtements à l'antique dépourvus d'oripeaux baroques.
Le colorismo général de cette scène biblique obéit au même parti pris : un fond neutre, des nuances de brun, un éclairage subtil, des ombres soulignées sans exagération.
Finalement, une représentation iconographique simple et didactique.
