Notes

This is Diano's preparatory sketch for his finished painting that was sold London, Sotheby's Olympia, 1 November 2005, lot 140, for £38,000 (and reproduced there on the front cover). The work enjoys a distinguished provenance having been part of the German industrialist Heinrich Scheufelen's collection, many of whose Italian baroque paintings are now housed in the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart.
