THE ROTTERDAM ARTIST GERARD ALTMANN WORKED IN AND NEAR HIS HOME TOWN, AND WAS ALSO KNOWN FOR HIS PORTRAITS, INCLUDING THAT OF THE ROTTERDAM COLLECTOR D.G. VAN BEUNINGEN.

ARBORETUM TROMPENBURG WAS ORIGINALLY PART OF THE 19TH CENTURY ESTATE ZOMERLUST IN KRALINGEN, BUILT FOR THE ROTTERDAM SHIPOWNER JAMES SMITH (1824-1894). IT WAS KEPT AND PARTLY REDESIGNED BY SEVERAL NEXT GENERATIONS OF JAMES SMITH'S FAMILY, BECAME PART OF THE FOUNDATION ARBORETUM TROMPENBURG IN 1958, AND IS STILL OPEN FOR PUBLIC VISITS.
