Notes

This cartoon is finished and coloured to a degree that allows it to stand alone as a decorative object. Metcalfe worked as a professional portrait painter and exhibited eleven works at the Royal Academy. However, the care he invested in this design is evident from the beauty of its construction.

Metcalfe's Vindemia, an allegorical design, sold at Sotheby's New York, 29 October 2002, lot 119.

This lot is subject to Collection and Storage Charges.
No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis
