Ivan Krylov's (1769-1844) fable was first published in 1815, and is based on the popular Russian proverb,'True charity is modest'. In Krylov's fable the Kind Fox, who initially advocates the welfare of the newly orphaned baby birds, soon ends up as the source of their demise as he devours them when they flock to him in gratitude.
