19th Century, French Seine Riverscape from Bonnieres, 1906 Oil on canvas H. 28" x W. 35 1/2" Signed lower left "Georgette" Frame: In a 4" molded gilt wood frame Condition: Fair (see photos for details) Artist Bibliography: Georgette Agutte was born in Paris in 1867. She became a student, the only woman at the time, of Gustave Moreau at the prestigious Ecole Des Beaux Arts de Paris. She was heavily influenced by her classmates and contemporaries whose work she avidly collected: Matisse, Rouault, etc. She exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais beginning in 1887, and later at the Salon des Independants and the Salon d'Automne. Her works can be found at several French museums as well as the Smithsonian Institute in the United States. Her correspondence with Henri Matisse has recently been published.
