Description

GEORGE M. WHITE (AMERICAN 1849-1915). THE AMERICAN BARK "CERES" OF SALEM. Built at Medford in 1846 and co-owned by Jacob Putnam (1780-1866), who founded an important tannery and export business in the Salem area. The ship's logs and George Franklin Putnam's journals of voyages on board the "Ceres" are in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum. Oil on canvas, 18 x 36 inches. Signed "G.M. White" and dated 1870, l.l.
