Notes

George Hughes studied painting with Ato Delaquis, Ata Kwami and Ablade Glover, among others, at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. Following a brief period (1992-1994) working and exhibiting in Europe, he moved to the United States, where he has taught at universities in Toledo, Oklahoma and Buffalo. In 2001, he received an MA in Art Education and also an MFA in Painting at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, U.S.A.

His work references the violence in colonial history and its residual effects on contemporary global conflicts. Hughes combines tribal art, commercial signage, symbols, text and urban iconography to explore socio-political issues.

Hughes's work has been shown internationally in Germany, Portugal, France, Denmark, China, Ghana, South Africa, The Netherlands, England, and the U.S.A. He currently splits his time between Buffalo, New York, and Accra in Ghana.
