Notes

Having studied under Paul Sandby whilst a cadet at Woolwich, Heriot's early work still bears something of Sandby's influence. The strong pen lines of this drawing being typical of his work in the 1780s. He became deputy Postmaster General of Canada in 1799, where he remained stationed until 1816, travelling throughout Quebec and Ontario. After returning to England, he continued to travel extensively, predominantly in Europe.
