There is an original letter from the artist dated 23rd August 1877 attached to the reverse of the panel. The letter is sent from Rose Cottage, Cranbrook to William Evans Esq. and reads 'My dear Sir/I beg to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of cheque for £60 for picture called The evening hour. I shall look forward to the pleasure of meeting you again before very long and remain, Yours faithfully George Hardy'
