EXHIBITED:
London, Gallery One, George Fullard, October 1961

LITERATURE:
Gillian Whiteley, Assembling the Absurd: The Sculpture of George Fullard, The Henry Moore Foundation in association with Lund Humphries, London, 1998, cat.no.55, p.63 (ill.b&w)

Gillian Whiteley has stated that the period from about 1959 to the end of 1964 was probably the most productive in Fullard's career and that 1961, to which the present work dates, was a turning point owing to the major one man show that was staged at Gallery One. Included in the Gallery One exhibition were nine bronzes from his series of female heads (1960-61), four 'falling women' pieces and seven works of assemblage. The exhibition was well reviewed with The Times noting that the work was 'full of promise and potentiality' and John Russell commenting that the large, falling women had 'genuine monumentality'. These reviews reinforced the opinion of John Berger who in 1958 had written 'Fullard is the best young (under 40) sculptor whom I know in this country'.
