Portrait of Maria Schillizzi, three-quarter-length, in a black silk and lace dress signed and dated 'Oeconomo 1855' (lower right) oil on canvas, an oval 54 x 413/4 in. (137 x 106 cm.) Painted in 1855 PROVENANCE Johnstone Norman and Co, London. NOTES Maria Schillizzi was presumed to be the wife of the Greek Ambassador in the 1850's. SALESROOM NOTICE Please note that Maria Schillizzi (born Alexandra P. Marrocordato) was married to the sucessful banker John Stephen Schillizzi and not the Greek Ambassador. Her sister Helena Schillizzi was married to Eleftherios Venizelos the Greek prime minister.
