General Gaspard Le Marchant Tupper C.B. (British 1826-1906) Governors Country Residence, Europa Point, Gibraltar watercolour over pencil, heightened in white on grey paper
8 x 11in (20.5 x 28cm).

Notes

* Born in Guernsey on the 8th August 1826, the son of Daniel Tupper and Anna Maria Le Marchant . Attended Elizabeth College, Guernsey 1833-1839. Entered The Royal Military Academy at Woolwich in 1841 and was commissioned as Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery in 1845, as Captain in 1853, as Brevet Major in 1854, as Brevet Lieutenant, as Brevet Lieutenant Colonel in 1862, as Colonel in in 1873 and Lieutenant General in 1887. Serves at Gibraltar and Jamaica before being posted to Crimea in 1854. Fought at The Battle of Balaclava. Wounded at The Battle of Inkermann. Fought at Tchernaya and fall of Sevastopol. Awarded several medals and clasps.
Posted to Bermuda 1856-1858. India 1865-67 and was Commandant at Woolwich for 1887 and 1888.
Was appointed Colonel Commandant of The Royal Horse Artillery from 1895.
He was offered, but declined the appointment of Lieutenant-Governor of Guernsey.
He died in London at 24 Cornwall Gardens S.S. in 1906.
He was a talented amateur artist and painted in all the countries he was posted to.
An Exhibition of his Crimean drawings was held in London in 1972..
