According to Evelyn Flory, "This painting is one of a fairly large series of 'table top' works that Gaylord painted. Over the course of his career, he returned repeatedly to the theme of the table top with arrangements of homey, ordinary objects. Trio of Purple Pears is from a series painted in the middle 1960's to the early 1970's."
