The 2nd Lord Cloncurry's advanced political views and friendship with the United Irishmen had resulted in his imprisonment in the Tower of London. On his release circa 1801, he engaged Richard Morrison to carry out improvements to his father's house - Lyons, Co. Kildare - whilst he embarked on an extravagant and acquisitive Grand Tour of Italy, buying sculptures and antiquities, including columns from the Golden House of Nero. It was on his extended sojourn that Lord Cloncurry encountered Gaspare Gabrielli, an Italian landscape artist, whom he brought back to Ireland in 1805 and commissioneed to paint the celebrated painted Music Room at Lyons.
