Notes

This composition contains elements familiar from Dughet's paintings: tree-lined river banks, waterfall and shepherd with a flock, but the scene is quite enclosed, without the distant vista familiar from his paintings. This could indicate it was a study made on the spot. Similar drawings in black chalk on blue paper are in Düsseldorf1 and the British Museum.2 1. Inv. nos. FP 4709, FP 4721; C.
