Lot 5: Gary Simmons, Hollywood, UV Pigment Print, 2013

Condition:
The UV pigment print is mounted on an aluminum board and appears in very good condition. The sheet-sized image measures 121.5 x 91 cm.

Gary Simmons (b. 1964)
Trained at the California Institute of the Arts, the New York native has become famous in the 1990s, when he presented his so-called ‘erasure drawings’, using chalkboards found in an abandoned school as canvases. The medium’s ambiguous and impermanent nature fascinated the artist, since it enabled him to partially obscure elements of his drawings, leaving behind disintegrated traces of his subjects. Later, Simmons transferred his ‘erasure’ technique to canvas using pigment, oil paint and cold wax. Simmons is mainly inspired by American films, but also by architecture and culture, which he investigates, for instance, with respect to the misconceptions of class and racial identity. Works by Gary Simmons have been acquired by major public art institutions, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
