Gao Yu
Born in the 1980s with China''s opening policy in effect, Gao
grew up with comic books and animated cartoons. Curator
Zhu Qi considered the works to possess a fundamental feature
of unique Chinese sociality and culture background.
The fundamental feature, as a matter of fact, is the subtle,
gleamingly, personal sense of pain and nihility, embodied a
Chinese-ness under the globalization context, materialized
the spiritual tension and the toughness of reality that dominates
Gao, which is rare to see in the cartoon art in Japan
and the States. Gao employs a relatively fixed and simple
method of painting, thereby allowing the visual model to
become more unadulterated ''actor''.
