Notes

To Chinese people, it is hard to truly appreciate Chinese
landscapes without being familiar with Taoist philosophies.
To western people, the nature world in front of Chinese
literati artists can never surpass the world in his heart. This
is also the reason why western landscape are different from
Chinese landscape. Chinese traditional art often displays
leisure, elegant and indifferent status. What they emphasize
is the soul. They try to escape from the reality or pursue a
myth-like, elegant reality. There seldom appear sufferings
and disasters in human world. The most typical is landscapes.
Figures in the landscapes are always watching chess,
playing, fishing, etc. But in Gao''s neo-landscape, there are
no figures, he only provides his own visual image and leaves
the image to the audience of his works. He needs the
audience to help him complete the works by conscious or
unconscious involvement.
