Porcelain incense burner with lid Incised signature Sue on base 8in. (20.3cm.) high In wood box titled Seihakuji sumi koro (Qingbai incense burner), signed Sueharu saku and sealed Sue NOTES Fukami grew up in Kyoto surrounded by the Chinese-style wares of his family's ceramic business. Both his father and his two brothers are potters. Fukami produces porcelain tableware and abstract porcelain sculpture in geometric forms softened by gentle curves and ethereal blue-tinged clear glazes. His career has been a resounding success affirmed by a long list of prestigious awards and exhibitions. When only twenty, his work appeared in the 1967 Nitten exhibition and between the ages of twenty-seven and thirty-eight he won 21 prizes for his work, including 6 grand prizes in major competitions at the Kyoto Arts and Crafts Exhibition, the Chunichi International Ceramics Exhibition, the Nitten, the International Ceramics Exhibition at Faenza, the Japan Ceramic Society and the Okada Shigeyoshi award. His work is in the Collections of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, the Suntory Museum, Tokyo, the Museo Internationale delle Ceramiche, Faenza, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. A one-man exhibition of his work was held at the Garth Clarke Gallery, New York, 2002.3.5--30.
