Item Overview

Description

Battle of Balaklawa at the Sapoune Heights on the Crim (25th of October 1854) signed 'fKaiser f'(lower left) oil on canvas 153.5 x 218.5 cm. PROVENANCE Her Majesty Viktoria, Queen of Sweden, n‚e Princess von Baden (1862-1930), thence by descent to the present owner. NOTES The present lot depicts the Scots Greys, a British Heavy Cavalry Brigade successfully charging into the Russian cavalry. Within the war this would prove to be an indecisive battle between Russian and British-Turkish forces, however it has become notorious for the heavy British casualties caused by a misunderstanding between Lord Raglan, the British commander in chief, and Lord Lucan, the cavalry commander. We would like to thank Mr R.F. Reinders Folmer for identifying the subject of the present lot. See illustration.
