Notes

Brentel took this composition from a print of the same subject by Jacques Callot. The engraving was part of a series Callot made at the end of his life, in 1635, which illustrated scenes from the New Testament.υ1

The episode is taken from Matthew XII, 1-3:

But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.
But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was ahungered, and they that were with him;

Christ among the Doctors and The Tribute Money, two other copies by Brentel after the same series have appeared at auction in recent years.υ2
