It was bought by our vendor's husband in 1998 from London dealers The Fine Art Society Plc after hearing of its existence from Elwell expert Wendy Loncaster at a talk given by her. Our Vendor's husband's great grandfather Col. J B Stacey Clitherow had been painted by Elwell, and was exhibited at the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition in 1931. George V commissioned Elwell to paint his portrait (His Majesty King George V - which now hangs in the Palace of Holyrood House, Edinburgh) and similarities between the two portraits can be seen. It is for this reason - the connection between the two portraits, that Col. Stacy Clitherow's great grandson bought the oil George V lying in state at Westminster Hall.***
