Description

Frederick John "Bartram" Hiles (1872-1927); female figure in rural scene, watercolour, signed Bartram Hiles 11 x 31cm, in glazed gilt frame. Bartram Hiles lost both arms in a road accident during his childhood and learned to write and draw by holding a pencil or paintbrush in his mouth. He studied at the Bristol School of Art and won a scholarship to South Kensington. He studied at the Royal Society of British Art in 1893 and later in the Royal Institute of Paintings in Watercolours and The Royal Academy.
