Admiral Sir James Hawkins of Whitshed Bt. (1762-1849), wearing uniform, blue coat with gold collar and epaulettes, breast star and red sash of the Order of the Bath and Naval gold medal (St. Vincent) on a blue and white ribbon, his left hand on the hilt of his sword, green curtain background (cracked)

James Hawkins of Whitshed was Lieutenant, 1778; Commander and Captain, 1780. He was aboard Namur at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent, 1797. He was Rear Admiral of the White, 1799; and Red, 1801. He was Vice Admiral of the Blue, 1804; White, 1805; and Red, 1808. He was Admiral of the Blue, 1810; White, 1812; and Red, 1821. Finally he was created Admiral of the Fleet, 8th January, 1844. He was awarded the KCB, 1815; GCB, 1830 and created a Baronet 16th May 1834.

A portrait of the sitter's wife (née Sophia Henrietta Bentinck) and son by William Grimaldi were sold in these rooms, 24th April 2004, lot 114, The Albion Collection of Fine Portrait Miniatures.
