Portrait of a Gentleman, identified as the Honorable William Gaston. Signed and dated "Frederic P. Vinton, 1893" u.r., sitter identified as "Hon. William Gaston/Governor 1875" on a presentation plaque. Oil on canvas, 50 x 40 in., framed. Condition: Puncture, tear, abrasions, patch reinforcement, craquelure, stretcher bar marks, surface grime.

N.B. Gaston (1820-1894) was a successful trial attorney who served in elected office for the City of Roxbury and was later elected Mayor of Boston, after Roxbury was annexed in 1868. He was later elected Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and served from January 7, 1875 to January 6, 1876.
