Item Overview

Description

Original etching [1888], title: Marie-Madeleine, plate signed, image approx. 3-3/4 x 6-1/4 in. plus wide margins. Frederic Emile Jeannin was born in Paris, December 9, 1859; died 1925.Leaving college at the age of sixteen, he became a designer of jewelry, in which branch he continued until he was twenty, making himself in that time well known in both Paris and London. During these four years he was a pupil of l'Ecole des Arts Decoratifs, and also followed the course of l'Ecole des Beaux Arts.At the age of twenty-one he was compelled to lay aside his art studies to comply with his military service, which occupied the five years from 1880 to 1885. This he did joyfully, as it had always been his wish to follow the military career, a desire which he was compelled to forego owing to family reasons. On his return from service he sought the advice of Eugene Champollion, the great etcher, who was an intimate friend of his family, as to his future. He was advised to devote his talents to etching, and he immediately began studying under his friend and Boilvin. He has exhibited at the Salon every year since 1886, as well as in the Exhibitions of the Black and White Society. In 1887 he received an Honorable Mention.Jeannin has done a number of small plates, of which "Accepted" and "Rejected" are good examples. His most important plate is after Alfred Steven's -' Last Glance," and was exhibited in the Salon of 1891.
