Fred Becker (American, 1913-2004)

Five John Henry Subjects: Birth of John Henry; John Henry Building a Railroad 1936; John Henry + the Witch Woman; John Henry's Death; and John Henry's Funeral. Each signed "...Becker" in pencil l.r., stamped "FEDERAL ART PROJECT NYC WPA" l.l., and titled in pencil l.c. Wood engravings on Basingwerk Parchment with watermarks, image sizes to 6 x 4 1/2 in. (15.2 x 11.4 cm), unmatted, unframed.
Condition: Margins over 1/2 inch with some deckled edges, masking tape to upper edges on verso (with accompanying staining to recto).

Provenance: From the collection of WPA artist Maxwell Mandell, by descent to the current owner.

No masking tape stains or creases on the images, and no foxing on the images or sheets. Unobtrusive surface abrasion at center of John Henry Building a Railroad.
