A young gentleman, in aubergine-coloured coat with brass buttons, white lace jabot, powdered wig en queue with black silk bag at nape of neck
signed and dated 'Noortwyck 1785' (lower right)
on ivory
oval, 1 3/8 in. (39 mm.) high, gilt-copper frame with pierced scrolling design of a Rebus in French '100 CESSE OR[...]' (incomplete) over hairwork reverse

In 1784, aged seventeen, Noortwyck was appointed Cabinets-Miniaturmaler to Clemens Wenceslas of Saxony, Archbishop-Elector of Trier (see Christie's, London, 28 May 2002, lot 87). Noortwyck died four years later; his works are extremely rare.
