Swiss born artist, Franz Biberstein, received passage to the United States from Germany in 1885 via the American Panorama Company, based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Formed by Chicago businessman, William Wehner, the company invited a select group of European artists to the United States to create panoramas of Civil War subjects. Biberstein remained in the States for the rest of his life, traveling throughout the western half of the country painting panoramic landscapes and contributing regularly to the Society of Milwaukee Artists and to the 1893 Chicago Exposition.
