Note:
Frank Hamilton studied at Stanford University and taught ceramics at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1958-1959. Moapa I was one of his earliest works on canvas and characteristic of his painting style. According to Thomas Albright, "His early paintings were abstractions animated by fluid, sometimes pictographic shapes that suggested the markings of medieval maps."
