Mary Scriven (d.c.1849), wearing cream dress with lace shoulder caps, short puffed sleeves and long gauze oversleeves, gold belt buckle and knotted ribbon corsage, her brown hair worn in ringlets.
Watercolour on paper, signed on the obverse and dated F. Rochard/ 1833, maple wood frame, the reverse with label inscribed with sitter's details.

Notes


Mary Scriven was born in Maiden Newton, Dorset, around 1802. She was the eighth and youngest child of John Scriven and his wife, Mary Bailey. Her father was a lawyer and serjeant-at-law who practised in the Inner Temple and, according to the 'The Gentleman's Magazine', he died at Ostend in May, 1843. Mary herself died, a spinster, in France six years later.
