Captain Robert Dean Werge was the son of Oswald Werge and his wife, Ellen Dean. He entered the 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot as Ensign on 3 April, 1832. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 7 August, 1833 and then to Captain on 11 June, 1841. However, by 1844, the Army List records him as dead, Werge having apparently passed away during a stop-over in Greece on the voyage home from India.
