The sitter was the younger son of Ellis St. John of Farley, and was named after his mother, Martha Goodyear, daughter of Edward Goodyear of Dogmersfield Park. The St. John family were important patrons of Hayman. He painted a conversation piece of Sir Paulet with his family, and single portraits of his wife Mary, his son Henry, and one of his daughters. Hayman also painted the figures in the enormous group portrait of Sir Paulet St. John and his Family in Dogmersfield Park in which Goodyear St. John is one of the mounted figures to the right.
