NOTE

A pentimento in the Madonna's robe lower right would suggest that the composition was originally intended just to incorporate the Madonna and Child in the center, and it is likely that the two side figures (Saints Joseph and John the Baptist) were added by the artist once the painting had already been begun, perhaps at the patron's behest.
