PROVENANCE

Private collection, Duisburg, 1973.

LITERATURE

E. Negro & N. Roio, Francesco Francia e la sua Scuola, Modena 1998, p. 256, cat. no. 180, reproduced (as Francesco Francia and Studio).

NOTE

The painting is closely related to Giuliano Bugiardini's Madonnas in composition, in particular to that in Bugiardini's painting in the Museo Bardini, Florence (reproduced in L. Pagnotta, Giuliano Bugiardini, Turin 1987, cat. no. 12). The present work is close in style and handling to a painting in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne, considered by Negro and Roio to have been painted by Francesco Francia towards the end of his career, with the collaboration of his studio and in particular probably that of one of his sons (see Negro & Roio, under Literature, p. 250, cat. no. 172, reproduced).
