France. National Gendarmerie a Cheval 1913 pattern helmet. A fine example by Franck & Ses Fils, Aubervilliers. Gilt metal skull with nickel silvers binding and with silvered helmet plate to the front depicting a flaming grenade. Mounted on the crown, a silvered metal comb ornamented with floral leaf decoration to either side. The front bears Medusa's head looking forward, the comb supports bristle brush. To the left side, a silvered plume holder supports a red cut feather plume (possibly a replacement). A pair of lion's head circular brass bosses support a set of leather backed silvered chin scales. The interior retains original cloth sweatband and adjustable leather lining formed by seven tongues. Horsehair mane to reverse absent oitherwise VGC. Housed in large black painted transit / storage tin.
