Description

882. WILLIAM HARNDEN FOSTER American artist who was best known as an illustrator of the rise of the railroad; studied at with Howard Pyle and with the famous Wyeth family of painters; painted covers for major magazines such as Harper's, Scribner's and the Saturday Evening Post; specialized in images of the railroad and also produced one of the most famous automobile images of the early 1900s for Oldsmobile in which he placed the new 1910 Oldsmobile Limited Touring automobile model along side the twentieth century. Fine signed color print, a dramatic color print of his famous painting of a 1910 Oldsmobile racing against [and beating] the 20th Century Limited locomotive, entitled "Setting the Pace". Signed "To J.W. Baer / from / William Harnden Foster / July 13, 1914" at the bottom left corner of the print. Bears imprinted copyright credit on blank margin "Copyright, Olds Motor Works, 1910." Undoubtedly taken from a book or magazine. Color Print Image area 8-15/16 in. x 6-7/16 in.; overall size 11-3/8 in. x 9-7/16 in. Tipped at top to a slightly larger sheet, a small, short tear at far edge of left blank margin. A handsome print for display. The 1910 Oldsmobile Limited Touring automobile was a high point for the Olds Motor Works. Riding atop 42 inch wheels, and equipped with factory "white" tires, the Limited was the prestige model in Oldsmobile's two-model line. $300 - 400
