Item Overview

Description

FORSTER, George (1754-1794). A Voyage Round the World, in His Britannic Majesty's Sloop, Resolution, commanded by Capt. James Cook, during the Years 1772, 3, 4, and 5. London: Printed for B. White, J. Robson, P. Elmsly, G. Robinson, 1777. 2 volumes, 4 o (288 x 234 mm). Folding engraved frontispiece map. Contemporary calf (rebacked). Provenance : William Adair (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. The author and his father, Johann Reinhold Forster, sailed as naturalists on Cook's second voyage aboard the Resolution . Cook made the first crossing of the Antarctic Circle on this voyage, discovered the South Sandwich Islands and dispelled the idea of a great southern continent. Although originally it was intended that Forster senior write the official account of the voyage, a dispute arose over payment and this unofficial account written by them both was issued under the son's name only. It was published in March 1777, six weeks before Cook's offical account of the voyage. "For all the controversy, A Voyage round the World is an interesting and important account that complements the official one with facts and astute observations on the human side of the voyage" (Rosove). Hill 625; Kroepelien 450; Mitchell Library Cook 1248; Nissen BBI 644; Rosove 132; Sabin 25134; Spence 464. (2)
