Lot 35: FOLLOWER OF GIOVANNI DI PIETRO, CALLED LO SPAGNA (DIED 1528)

oil on panel This composition derives from the central portion of a lost altarpiece by Lo Spagna, showing The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine, known through an old copy sold at Christie's, New York, June 9, 1978, lot 116, as Attributed to Vincenzo Tamagni; (for which see F. Gualdi Sabatini, Giovanni di Pietro, detto lo Spagna, 1984, vol. 2, illus. plate 321). The pose of the Child derives from Lo Spagna's cartoon for the altarpiece, and the artist here has adapted the disposition of the figures slightly to accommodate the two-figure composition.
