Notes

Hedelan (1859-1942) was the Chinese name of Reverend Isaac Taylor Headland, an American missionary and accomplished scholar who went to Beijing in 1890 and served as a professor at Peking University. His experience gained from living for 17 years in China during a turbulent period resulted in numerous publications. One was Court Life in China, which used first-hand information garnered by his wife Dr. Miriam Sinclair, who served as part of the medical team for Dowager Empress Cixi and her family.
