Florence Camm (1874-1960) Portrait of Steve Donoghue Charcoal, crayon and wash 43.5cm x 27cm Steve Donoghue, one of the greatest jockeys of the twentieth century, began his career as a stable lad the Freemasons Lodge in Newmarket. His employer, Alfred Sadler Jr., soon discovered that the eighteen year old boy was a talented rider. After spending a further year in the stables of John Porter and Dobson Peacock he moved in 1903 to Chantilly, France, where he built his international fame. Between 1914 and 1923 he won nine hundred and forty six races and the Derby on six occasions. He remains the only Jockey to have won this world famous race in three consecutive years.
