Lot 290: Flemish School of the 15th - 16th century - Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child

Item Overview

Description

Polychrome and gilded carved wood. This sculptural piece, belonging to the Flemish School of the 15th-16th century, represents Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child in a devotional composition that reflects the technical mastery and profound symbolism of late medieval Flemish art. Saint Anne, on the left, appears holding the Child Jesus in a gesture of presentation, while the Virgin Mary, located on the right, observes serenely. Both figures, dressed in richly detailed tunics, combine the dynamic folds of the carving with the opulence of gilding and polychromy, achieving a sensation of solemnity and visual richness.

The robust and maternal figure of Saint Anne contrasts with the delicacy and youth of Mary, creating a compositional balance between the two generations. The Child Jesus, naked and with a natural gesture, adds a touch of humanity to the scene, reinforcing the spiritual and family bond between the characters. The polychromy, which preserves traces of bright colors such as green and red, together with the resplendent gold, enhances the details of the clothing and facial expressions, providing an effect of monumentality and sacredness.

The stylistic design, characterized by a detailed treatment of the folds of the clothing and soft, naturalistic facial expressions, is typical of the Flemish tradition, which fuses Gothic influence with an incipient Renaissance realism. Such works were intended to inspire devotion and emotionally connect the viewer with the sacred scene.

The three-dimensional composition and the use of noble materials such as polychrome and gilded wood reflect not only the technical skill of the workshop that produced it, but also the liturgical context of its creation, probably intended to preside over a private altar or chapel. This sculpture stands out as an example of Flemish religious art, where spirituality and technical mastery combine to create pieces of extraordinary beauty and symbolic meaning. Dimensions: 54 x 17 x 49 cm.
