Description

Fine and Rare Tiffany & Co. Pan-American Exposition Sterling Silver Plateau, 1901, New York, probably designed by Paulding Farnham (1859-1927), the circular mirrored plateau mounted in an everted silver frame decorated with elaborately chased openwork palmettes and acanthus fronds joined by bellflower and rosette swags, marked, under the rim "Tiffany & Co./14738/Makers/3726/Sterling Silver/925-1000/T" and the special "beaver" mark used on items made for the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, 1901, dia. 27". Provenance: The Houston, Texas estate of Mrs. George P. Kelley. Note: For other Farnham designs with identical bellflower and rosette swag motifs, see John Loring's "Magnificent Tiffany Silver" (New York: Abrams, 2001) p. 205, a cheval mirror made for the Paris Exposition of 1900, and p. 223 for a Renaissance-style coffeepot exhibited at both the Paris Exposition of 1900 and the Buffalo Exposition of 1901.
