Spanish born artist Fernando Sánchez Castillo received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Universidad Complutense, Madrid in 1993 and his MA Philosophy and Aesthetics at the Universidad Autónoma, Madrid in 1995. In his work the artist searches the course of history for interruptions and the absurd, which he finds in monuments, documents, public space and tradition that become tools for disinterring our most recent past. Through sculpture, drawing and video Fernando Sánchez Castillo examines the relation between art and power, alluding to collective historical memory, and proving, moreover, the authority that certain symbols still wield in our society. Work by the artist is owned by the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain (Paris), MUSAC Collection, Museum of Contemporary Art of Castile and Len, Galician Centre of Contemporary Art (Santiago de Compostela), Rabobank Collection (The Netherlands), Fondation Jean Marc Salomn (Annecy). Amongst others, he has exhibited at Sonsbeek, Arnhem (2008), Down with Intelligence, MUSAC (Leon) (2007), Ieder het zijne To Each His Own, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam (2007), Mercury in Retrograde, de Appel arts centre, Amsterdam (group exhibition) (2006), 26th São Paulo Biennial (2004).
