VARIOUS PROPERTIES

Hertenberger's depiction of the goddess Diana - usually known as the goddess of the hunt - in this painting as surrounded by babies and crocuses refers to her as the protectress of the unborn and newly born. The moon in the background hints at her connection with the lunar cycle.

Fernand Hertenberger was a painter and illlustrator and a pupil of Tony Robert-Fleury and Déchenaud. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes in Paris and illustrated Là-bas by Huysmans and Colonel Chabert by Balzac.
